Chester Tour Company has launched a brand new Viking Tour, starting from 13 July 2024. The new walking tour will delve into the city’s Viking past, exploring how the Vikings lived and interacted with their Anglo-Saxon neighbours over 1,000 years ago.

The Viking Chester tour features costumed guides dressed as a fearsome Viking fighter and a Shield Maiden, complete with replica swords, shields, and many other authentic items. These guides will lead groups of visitors and residents from the Town Hall Visitor Information Centre to various locations associated with the Viking settlers who once called Chester home. Each participant on the new tour will receive a replica Viking coin as a memento of their journey through history.

Gerald Tattum, Director of The Guild of Ghost Hunters Ltd said, “We are delighted to launch this new venture and appreciate all the support we have received to get it off the ground, especially from The Chester Town House in Lower Bridge Street, an area where the Vikings settled, as well as in Handbridge across the river.”

The tours will be led by an archaeologist and a historian to ensure the accuracy and richness of the content.

Gerald Tattum added, “The Age of the Vikings is just as important as all the other eras of the city’s history and well worth exploring. We have uncovered many fascinating aspects of their culture, from mythical ‘flying cats’ and ‘zombies’ to ‘wolf warriors’ and the mischievous deity Loki!

“There are still many unanswered questions about the Vikings in Chester. It’s a mystery why no Viking graves have been found here yet. Some dead Viking leaders were traditionally buried in ships underground along with their treasures.”

Tickets for the tours can be booked at the Chester Visitor Information Centre and online. Latecomers can also pay the Viking guide in cash. Tours depart at 11am and 3:15pm on Saturdays, from June to October, starting 13 July 2024.
