Mharsanta, part of Lomond Leisure Group, is set to host the return of Shipyard Bards, Tall Tales and Dinner – a cultural event celebrating Glasgow’s shipbuilding heritage. Taking place at Mharsanta restaurant on Glasgow’s Bell Street, this event will run throughout early 2025, continuing its successful run that began in 2019.
Shipyard Bards offers a chance to explore this heritage through stories, traditional songs, and images. The event is accompanied by a two-course meal of Scottish favourites and a dram of Stobcross whisky from The Clydeside Distillery.
The event draws on research from GMCT, archival materials from the Fairfield Heritage Museum, and the recollections of former shipyard workers. Many of the guests at past events came from shipbuilding families, and some of the stories featured were collected during the initial shows. The stories – ranging from humorous to more serious – touch on topics like famous work-ins and spirited exchanges between the bosses in their bowler hats and the workers in their bunnets.
Mae MacInnes, hailing from the Isle of Skye and steeped in its rich musical tradition, will sing songs inspired by the shipyards. A graduate of Glasgow’s Conservatoire with a First Class Honours degree in Drama, Performance, and Theatre Arts, Mae brings her distinctive style and passion to the performance.
The event is further enriched by a visual journey, with images of the Clyde, its historic shipyards, and their ships – both past and present – bringing the stories to life throughout the evening.
