Fam Trip: Falkirk Wheel

SAVE THE DATE

Thursday 22 May 2025

16:15 – 18:00

We are pleased to invite members to a fam trip with Scottish Canals on Thursday 22 May 2025.

This tour takes buyers from the visitor centre, into the lower Gondola of the Falkirk Wheel. The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world, designed by Tony Kettle, an architect from Edinburgh and built by Butterly Engineering of Derbyshire. Once the boat is in the lower gondola, the Wheel will start to rotate 25 meters into the air to the upper level to join with the aqueduct. If the Scottish weather has been kind, then the views from the top are stunning. On a good day, you can see up to 50 miles away.

Once the Gondola reaches the top, the Skipper and Crew will then take sail along the aqueduct and through Roughcastle Tunnel, at this point passing under the Roman Antonine Wall, a UNESCO protected historical site and the most Northern Frontier of the Roman Empire. On the other side of the Tunnel, entering the South Basin, at this point the boat turns around and buyers can see two top locks which other boaters use to connect onto the Union Canal, which stretches 32 miles to Edinburgh’s Pacific Quay. The boat then returns to the Falkirk Wheel, at this point the Skipper and Crew will point out some of Scotland’s famous landmarks, for example, the Kelpies, Fife, and various hill ranges and Munros.
