Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2025 report has announced East Anglia as one of the top 10 must-visit regions in the world – the only region in the UK to receive this recognition.

The selected destinations are noted for their unique experiences, relevance, and commitment to sustainability, community, and diversity. For the 15th edition of the Best in Travel series, Lonely Planet’s experts, global contributors, and publishing partners curated a diverse list across three categories: cities, countries, and regions.

According to the publication, East Anglia – which encompasses the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire – offers a rich blend of historical charm and natural beauty. It is celebrated for its old-world English character, featuring nature reserves ideal for birdwatching, such as Minsmere and Cley Marshes, vibrant coastal towns, and picturesque inland waterways.

Patricia Yates, Chief Executive of VisitBritain said, “It is fantastic to see East Anglia take its place on the global stage as one of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2025 top regions. The area boasts an outstanding coastline, fabulous seaside towns, historic attractions, waterways, and breathtaking countryside. This accolade will encourage domestic and international visitors to explore more of the region and discover the warm welcome that awaits them.”

Lonely Planet emphasises the importance of responsible tourism and encourages travellers to visit during off-peak seasons to minimise their impact on local communities.

Pete Waters, Executive Director of Visit East of England said, “This region is great to visit all year round, with superb built and natural environments, but there are also some unmissable events in Winter and Spring like the spectacular migrations of hundreds of thousands of geese and swans and the seal pupping season when this region has some of the largest colonies in the country.”

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2025 features photography, local insights, and essential experiences for each destination listed. The hardback book is available for purchase at £14.99 from the Lonely Planet Shop or at bookstores nationwide.
