Glasgow Life’s Museums team have developed a series of new Privileged Access tours specifically for the travel trade, to coincide with new exhibition Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Making the Glasgow Style, running at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum until 14 August as part of the Mackintosh 150 programme of events.
The programme celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Glasgow’s iconic art nouveau architect, designer and artist, Charles Mackintosh. It is aimed at providing a focal point in safeguarding Mackintosh’s legacy for future generations, inspiring more young people to take an interest in art and design and promoting his unique portfolio for visitors and tourists.
Groups can take guided morning (9am – 10am) or evening (5pm onwards) tours of the exhibition led by either a member of the Glasgow Museums team or a Mackintosh curator. The tours are available with or without a food option, and groups will also receive a 10% discount in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum gift shop. Please click here for more information.
Other tours developed for the travel trade include Highlights at Kelvingrove and Riverside; Behind the Scenes at Museums Store; and Research Your Family History with Glasgow Archives. More information can be found here.
New tourism films shine spotlight on Glasgow neighbourhoods
A series of short films has been launched to showcase the unique appeal of Glasgow’s neighbourhoods to potential tourists. Filmed across the whole of Glasgow, they shine a spotlight on more than 120 locations, taking audiences on an inspiring journey through the city’s rich cultural and sporting heritage, legendary music scene, diverse restaurants and bars, and unrivalled nightlife.
The new 60-second films feature the likes of Finnieston, the Merchant City, Shawlands, Maryhill, Govan, Partick and Dennistoun, and are aimed at encouraging visitors to explore the city and ‘live like a local’.
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said, “There’s a clear trend toward authenticity in travel today – visitors want to experience real neighbourhoods and communities, and immerse themselves in local culture. It’s about connecting people and place in a genuine way.
“Glasgow is now one of Europe’s first choice destinations and our neighbourhoods are just as vibrant and filled with as much character and world-class cultural assets as cities like Berlin and Rome. We’re rightly proud of everything that’s on offer to visitors and citizens alike, and these new films, which have been shaped by our people and businesses, showcase Glasgow at its best as both a great global city and great local city.”
