Kynren – An Epic Tale of England in County Durham has won the Innovation in Tourism category at the 2018 Group Travel Awards.
The Innovation in Tourism Award recognises innovation with creative tourism products and initiatives, and is one of five awards voted for by the editorial team at GTO Magazine. Kynren’s use of innovative and state-of-the-art theatrical techniques to create a spectacular event for groups to attend led to its win.
Set against the backdrop of Auckland Castle in County Durham, the live action show is performed on a 7.5 acre stage in front of an 8,000 seat amphitheatre, with a 1,000-strong cast and crew. The show takes visitors on an immersive 90-minute time travel adventure through 2,000 years of England’s history, myth and legend using a combination of special effects, pyrotechnics, live stunts and orchestral music.
Kynren first opened in July 2016 and attracted over 100,000 visitors to its first season, including from the USA, China, South Africa and the Middle East. Now in its third year, Kynren is looking to partner with a number of key travel trade partners with specialist group travel discounts and corporate incentives, and by 2020 is expected to have welcomed in excess of half a million visitors to Bishop Auckland.
The accolade comes shortly after Kynren’s recent win of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its entire cast and crew.
