Langdale Chase Hotel Afternoon Tea

Langdale Chase has introduced a new Afternoon Tea inspired by the novel Swallows and Amazons, marking the 50th anniversary of the story’s film adaptation. The hotel, which hosted the film’s cast and crew during production in 1974, reflects on this historical connection by offering a themed tea service that celebrates the novel’s enduring legacy.

The Afternoon Tea is presented on bespoke crockery crafted and hand-painted by local artisans. Depending on weather conditions, guests can enjoy this offering in the hotel’s dining room, lounges, or on the lakeside Terrace.

The menu features items inspired by the novel’s culinary elements. Savoury options include smoked salmon with beetroot and cream cheese, and pemican beef with horseradish and red onion, reflecting the food enjoyed by the characters. Additional selections, such as potted shrimp with crumpets and savoury cheddar doughnuts, are included. Sweet treats pay homage to the novel’s whimsical elements, with items like a chocolate and marmalade fancy and gooseberry choux. The menu will be updated seasonally to provide fresh flavours throughout the year.

The Terrace and the AA Rosette Dining Room at Langdale Chase are available daily for guests and visitors. The Terrace offers lunch service, while the Dining Room provides à-la-carte dinner and Sunday lunch.

Langdale Chase’s connection to Arthur Ransome’s work is a point of pride. The hotel not only hosted Dame Virginia McKenna, the film’s lead actress but also served as the venue for the cast and crew’s wrap party in 1974. This historical tie adds an authentic charm to the themed afternoon tea, making it a must-visit for fans of the novel and classic British literature.

Ransome himself is also believed to have been a frequent visitor to the hotel during his time in the Lake District. Langdale Chase’s lakeside views and formal gardens may have inspired his book.

Local artisans contributing to the tea service include Fiona May Ceramics, Croglin, Martin Miles-Moore, and Lauren Frost. Their handcrafted tableware reflects the landscape and heritage of the Lake District.
