London Transport Museum unveils new Hidden Tour

London Transport Museum has unveiled a new Hidden London tour, Dover Street: Alight Here for Green Park, which will open in January 2025. The tour provides an opportunity to explore rarely seen areas of Green Park Tube station, including parts of the former Dover Street station from 1906, last accessible to passengers in the 1930s.

Visitors will discover original passenger corridors, lift landings, and passageways that still retain vintage tiles and signs from the early 20th century. The tour also includes access to Green Park’s ventilation system, providing views over Jubilee and Victoria line platforms and trains below.

The tour delves into Dover Street’s role during the Second World War when the station served as a secure meeting point for the London Transport Executive Board during air raids. The station’s underground location allowed it to serve as a hidden control centre, ensuring the continuity of Underground operations. Lord Ashfield, then chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board, even had a secret bedroom fitted within the station to provide secure lodging during these times.

The tour covers the post-war expansion of Green Park station, detailing how the station grew to accommodate two additional lines, the Victoria and Jubilee. As part of this experience, visitors will see the concealed ventilation shafts and corridors, which provide views of modern Tube lines from hidden vantage points.

Dover Street: Alight Here for Green Park tours will start on 22 January 2025, and prices start from £42.
