Mar Hall £20 million renovation to complete in Spring 2025

Mar Hall Resort

Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort has revealed details of its £20 million renovation, set to be completed by Spring 2025. Led by Glasgow-based design studio Graven, the project will see a comprehensive transformation and expansion of one of Scotland’s well-established heritage hotels.

Mar Hall is a five-star heritage hotel in Scotland, just 10 minutes from Glasgow International Airport. The estate features an 18-hole championship golf course, private event spaces, and leisure facilities, including a 20-metre swimming pool and spa.

Originally designed in 1828 by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of London’s British Museum, Mar Hall opened as a hotel and golf resort in 2004 and has hosted high-profile guests, including Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Harry Styles, and Brad Pitt.

Following its acquisition in 2024 by Dubai-based Dutco Group, the property joins a portfolio of hotels in Dubai, the Maldives, Seychelles, and Edinburgh. The £20 million renovation is led by investment and asset management firm Align Partners.

Design studio Graven oversees the complete redesign of the guest rooms, suites, apartments, and all public spaces, including the main entrance, reception, Members’ Lounge, Long Gallery, bar, restaurant, and private event areas. The project will introduce new facilities such as a 24-person private cinema, gaming room, and billiards room.

Lisa King, Design Director at Align Partners said, “We approached Mar Hall’s renovation with a deep respect for the building’s storied past, whilst reimagining its spaces to meet the expectations of today’s luxury travellers. The transformed Mar Hall blends timeless elegance with a standout contemporary design, allowing guests to experience the hotel’s legacy and surroundings in new, inspiring ways.”

Graven is collaborating with Glasgow-based studios Timorous Beasties, Art Pistol, and Elegant Clutter for interior design, art curation, and bespoke furnishings to develop a distinctive and sophisticated aesthetic.

Guests will enter through the original “porte cochère” (carriage porch) to a newly designed grand reception area. Inspired by the property’s Victorian heritage, this space will feature black and white marble floors, a central chandelier, and brushed bronze and textured velvet accents.

The accommodation will feature 74 guest rooms, including three grand suites and eight junior suites, with sizes ranging from 25m² to 115m². The smaller suites will have botanical wallpaper, curved contours, soft textures, warm-toned colour palettes, and newly designed ensuite bathrooms.

The Long Gallery will serve as a central gathering space, offering views of the surrounding gardens. Featuring a central bar, inviting seating, and an eclectic art collection, the space is designed for hosting exhibitions, private celebrations, charity events, and corporate functions.

Situated at the end of the gallery, the refurbished restaurant will offer an intimate dining experience with panoramic views of the Kilpatrick Hills. The revitalised bar will overlook the River Clyde, providing a social setting for guests to enjoy craft cocktails and local whisky. A new private dining room will be an exclusive venue for special occasions.

Designed as a private retreat for Mar Hall members, the Members’ Lounge will feature blue walls, warmly illuminated shelves, comfortable seating, a fireplace, and soft lighting, creating a relaxed atmosphere for informal gatherings and events.

The luxury spa will offer wellness experiences, including bespoke massages, facials, and beauty treatments, in the resort’s most recently developed wing. State-of-the-art 20-metre loungers, steam rooms, saunas, and brass-tapped showers will surround the heated indoor swimming pool. A new gym will overlook the pool, equipped with PRIMAL Performance Series cardio equipment and weights.

Head Landscaper Wayne Simon Page will redesign the Mar Hall Estate’s grounds. The 56 acres of ancient woodland and three original fountain pools will be restored, alongside the introduction of two maze gardens, a sunken seating area with a fire pit, and an al fresco reading room. Additional tree and shrub species will be planted to enhance biodiversity, and new bee gardens and wildlife viewing stations will support the hotel’s eco-friendly initiatives.
