Visit Bristol have launched a new microsite called Haunt Bristol to shine a light on a growing trend in the tourism industry, dubbed spooky tourism.

The microsite within the Visit Bristol website opens up another side to the city for both tourists and residents. Visitors can explore Bristol’s Gothic history, uncovering the city’s spooky secrets and hidden heritage.

Focusing on Bristol’s alternative attractions, events and experiences, Haunt Bristol follows in the footsteps of a similar website, Haunt Manchester.

Emily Oldfield of Haunt Manchester, also working on Haunt Bristol said, “The launch of Haunt Bristol is incredibly exciting – it’s an opportunity to explore hidden histories and Gothic content in and around the city, as well as celebrating the people and places who contribute to Bristol’s alternative scene. We are looking forward to working with the talented team at Visit Bristol as well as connecting with a range of cultural organisations, venues, and individuals across the city.”

Haunt Bristol is a sister site to Haunt Manchester, a subsection of Visit Manchester which launched in June 2018 and is coordinated by a team at Manchester Metropolitan University, working closely with its Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies, The Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage and the Encountering Corpses project.

The Haunt Bristol microsite covers haunted tours, death cafés, spooky tourism experiences at spaces such as Arnos Vale Cemetery and The Hatchet, as well as weird secrets of the city’s churches and mysterious places to visit, proving Bristol is an alternative place to visit all year-round.

Emily added, “To have the opportunity to bring our Manchester model to Bristol is wonderful. There is clearly an appetite among creatives, locals, and tourists for exploring the more mysterious sides of the city. From underground music to unusual artwork, here at Haunt Bristol, we are determined to delve into the sides of the city perhaps less covered by the cultural mainstream. We’d love to hear from people about what they would like Haunt Bristol to cover.”
